چکیده

Palynological data from the Newark basin of the Newark Supergroup reveal a spike in the spore/pollen ratio at the TriasGc/Jurassic boundary. This spore spike is coincident with a 60% regional extinction of the palynoflora and approximately synchronous with terrestrial vertebrate extinctions. Orbitally controlled sedimentary cycles allow stratigraphic sections to be calibrated in time, constraining the duration of the microfloral turnover to an interval of 21 Icy, The geologically brief palynofloral break is similar to Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary fern spikes. These data <upport ;I Triassic/Jurassic boundary impact-extinction scenario.

A Be production-rate calibration for the Arctic

We present a Baffin Bay Be production-rate calibration derived from glacial deposits in western Greenland and Baffin Island, and test our results against published Be calibration datasets to develop an Arctic Be production rate. Our calibration comprises: (i) Be measurements from moraine boulders linked to a Cdated moraine at Jakobshavn Isfjord in western Greenland, (ii) an independent and prev...

Time calibration of Triassic/Jurassic microfloral turnover, eastern North America Reply

Evidence from sedimentation rates and stratigraphic ranges of palynomorph species indicate that van Veen is incorrect in inferring a condensed section at the Triassic/Jurassic (TR / J ) boundary in the Newark Supergroup. Van Veen bases his argument entirely on the ranges of palynomorph species in western Europe, but correlation of the European sections is equivocal, and the range data employed ...

Forest losses predict bird extinctions in eastern North America.

Claims that there will be a massive loss of species as tropical forests are cleared are based on the relationship between habitat area and the number of species. Few studies calibrate extinction with habitat reduction. Critics raise doubts about this calibration, noting that there has been extensive clearing of the eastern North American forest, yet only 4 of its approximately 200 bird species ...

Temperature dependence, spatial scale, and tree species diversity in eastern Asia and North America.

The increase of biodiversity from poles to equator is one of the most pervasive features of nature. For 2 centuries since von Humboldt, Wallace, and Darwin, biogeographers and ecologists have investigated the environmental and historical factors that determine the latitudinal gradient of species diversity, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The recently proposed metabolic t...

Space can substitute for time in predicting climate-change effects on biodiversity.

"Space-for-time" substitution is widely used in biodiversity modeling to infer past or future trajectories of ecological systems from contemporary spatial patterns. However, the foundational assumption--that drivers of spatial gradients of species composition also drive temporal changes in diversity--rarely is tested. Here, we empirically test the space-for-time assumption by constructing ortho...
